Those of you that have read your fresh copy of Doctor Who Magazine today will have been digesting the exciting merchandise releases that are due to take place over 2013 in the form of books, audio plays and DVD releases. But let’s not forget one of the other mediums that will be contributing to Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary celebrations: comic books.
IDW publishing, already well known for their popular Doctor Who series, will be releasing a twelve part serial over this year called Prisoners of Time. It follows a large mystery that spans the entire run of the series and each issue will feature a different incarnation of the Doctor staring this January with the First Doctor.
There’ll be familiar villains including the Zarbi and a whole host of the Doctor’s old friends. Behind the scenes, one or two well known British comic book writer with a long association to Doctor Who, specifically Mike Collins and Lee Sullivan, will be lending their talents to proceedings as well.
Lee Sullivan, who has been drawing Doctor Who comics since 1988 for the Doctor Who Magazine comic strip, will be responsible for the artwork in Prisoners of Time issue two. Mike Collins, whose Doctor Who Magazine comics include The Love Invasion, Art Attack, The Cruel Sea and The Lodger, will be drawing issue three. Artist Simon Fraser will be handling the artwork for issue one.
On top of this, each issue will include an essay on the featured Doctor by other well known Doctor Who names. For issues one and two Big Finish Productions producer and director John Ainsworth will be handling these duties before handing over the responsibility to Doctor Who legend Gary Russell for issue three.
Doctor Who: Prisoners of Time will be released on 23rd January 2013 from IDW Publishing.
